Tanzania, Al Jazeera seek to introduce Kiswahili Channel

DOHA: A plan is underway to introduce the Kiswahili Channel at Al Jazeera, it was revealed today, October 6, 2025, in Doha during talks between Tanzania and Qatar in Doha.

Tanzanian envoy to Qatar, Habibu Awesi Mohamed, met and held talks with Al Jazeera Media Network’s Director General, Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal bin Khalifa Al Thani, intending to boost collaboration in media and information exchange between Tanzania and the global broadcaster.

The meeting, held at the Al Jazeera headquarters in Doha, focused on exploring areas of collaboration in media, communication, and capacity building.

The Tanzanian envoy expressed his gratitude to Qatar and Al Jazeera for their reception while highlighting several key areas of interest, including establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for training and capacity building, promoting Tanzania’s tourism attractions, and exploring the introduction of a Swahili-language broadcasting channel.

On his part, Sheikh Nasser welcomed the initiatives and confirmed Al Jazeera’s readiness to review the draft MoU.

He also noted the potential for digital media coverage of Tanzania’s tourism attractions, including the Tanzania Royal Tour documentary, and assigned digital media experts to work with the Tanzanian Embassy to advance these initiatives.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in media and communication, recognizing the sector’s vital role in fostering mutual understanding and promoting Tanzania’s visibility across the region and beyond.

This meeting marks a significant milestone in the growing partnership between Tanzania and Al Jazeera Media Network, paving the way for enhanced media collaboration and cultural exchange between the two nations.
