Tanzania affirms its commitment to control tobacco use, support global actions

GENEVA: THE Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening strategies for controlling tobacco use, combating related diseases, and supporting global collaborative actions aimed at safeguarding public health.
This was revealed by the delegation from the United Republic of Tanzania that participated in the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC COP11).
The conference is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 17 to 22, 2025, and aims to discuss global strategies for controlling tobacco use and protecting public health.

The delegation is led by Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdallah Saleh Possi, and includes experts from various ministries such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the ministries responsible for Agriculture, Investment, Industry, and Trade. The broad composition of the team highlights the significance of these discussions for the nation’s health, economy, and development.
Among the senior officials in the delegation is former Tanzanian Ambassador to Switzerland and Italy, Dr. James Msekela, who is also participating in the conference. Tanzania continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to protecting the health of its citizens through participation in international meetings such as the WHO FCTC COP11.
