Tanzania affirms efforts to build a blue economy

NICE, FRANCE: THE Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has affirmed the country’s commitment to the sustainable management of the Pemba Channel and broader marine ecosystems, as part of its efforts to build a resilient Blue Economy.

Dr. Mpango made the remarks while officiating a high-level side event titled “Building a Resilient Blue Economy in the Pemba Channel: Inclusive Marine Resource Management for Sustainable Livelihoods and Climate Action.”

The event was held on the sidelines of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, currently taking place in Nice, France.

He said Tanzania aims to make the Blue Economy a model of inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, and long-term resilience.

The Vice President stressed the urgency of collective action to protect oceans for the benefit of both current and future generations.

He added that Tanzania is taking deliberate steps to address threats facing marine ecosystems to ensure the resilience and long-term sustainability of the Pemba Channel.

Among the key interventions, Dr. Mpango highlighted the strengthening of marine conservation through robust management and the expansion of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

He revealed that two new marine conservation areas in Pemba are in the final stages of being designated, underscoring Tanzania’s dedication to preserving its unique marine heritage.

Furthermore, Dr Mpango noted that community involvement is central to Tanzania’s Blue Economy strategy.

This includes fostering inclusive and equitable development in marine and coastal regions, promoting alternative livelihoods, enhancing value chains for small-scale fishers, and unlocking economic opportunities for coastal communities, all while conserving critical ecosystems.
