Tanzania acts on EU air safety alert

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has taken decisive measures to safeguard tourism, international travel and business continuity following the European Union’s (EU) ban on aircraft registered in Tanzania.

On Wednesday, Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) General Director Salim Msangi announced new steps aimed at minimising disruption to travellers and airlines.

TCAA has granted additional traffic rights for six months to Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways to support and facilitate local and regional connections to major Tanzanian destinations, Mr Msangi said.

He added that TCAA has also increased flexibility for Tanzanian operators by allowing regulatory clearance for partnerships with internationally registered airlines through codeshare or block permit arrangements.

“This will ensure continued operations within Tanzania’s destinations without disruption,” Mr Msangi explained.

He further noted ongoing engagement with development partners and stakeholders, including airline opera tors, to coordinate responses and minimise inconvenience to travellers.

Importantly, discussions between the Tanzanian government, via the Ministry of Transport and TCAA and the EU are ongoing to address the concerns that led to the ban.

“Our goal is to resolve these issues so that Tanzania can be removed from the EU air safety list in due course,” he said.

Reaffirming Tanzania’s commitment to international safety standards, Mr Msangi insisted that the country re mains open and accessible.

“The aviation sector continues to operate under inter national safety and regulatory frameworks,” he said.

He explained that these temporary arrangements are designed to maintain business continuity, uphold investor confidence and ensure reliable air services during this period.

Recently, Tanzania was added to the EU’s latest Air Safety List update, which prohibits Tanzanian registered air carriers from operating to, from, or within the European bloc, including overflight rights.
