Tanga sets measures to tackle climate variability

TANGA: TANGA Region has put in place a number of strategies aimed at cushioning agricultural production against the effects of expected climate variability, regional authorities have said.

The Regional Commissioner, Ambassador Dr Batilda Burian, revealed this during a press conference held to deliver her New Year message to residents of the region.

Dr Burian said recent weather forecasts indicate the likelihood of unreliable rainfall patterns in the coming season, a situation that could affect farming activities if not properly addressed.

However, she assured residents that the region has already prepared adequate measures to ensure continued agricultural productivity and food security. She noted that Tanga has consistently maintained its status as a food-surplus region, adding that deliberate efforts are being made to sustain that position despite the anticipated climatic challenges.

“Our preparations are focused on ensuring that farmers are well supported and that agricultural production remains stable, even in the face of changing weather patterns,” she said.

The Regional Commissioner also commended residents for their solidarity, peaceful conduct and close cooperation with government authorities throughout the past year, noting that such unity enabled the region to remain calm while some parts of the country experienced unrest.

She said peace and cooperation among residents are critical foundations for social stability and economic development, and urged the public to safeguard these values as the New Year begins.

“As we enter the New Year, I call upon all residents to continue nurturing peace, unity and cooperation with government institutions, as these are essential for sustainable development and improved livelihoods,” she stressed.

In addition, Dr Burian announced that the Regional Administrative Office, in collaboration with the Tanga City Council and the area Member of Parliament, has organised New Year celebrations to be held at Uhuru Park.

She said the celebrations will feature various activities, including traditional Tanga cuisine cooking competitions, performances by local artistes and the provision of free food to members of the public, as part of efforts to promote unity and celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.
