TANESCO saves 1.7bn/- in revenue loss

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has managed to save an estimated 1.7bn/- in revenue loss, following the ongoing inspection of the electricity infrastructure exercise across the country.
Assessing the implementation of the exercise earlier this week, the Metering System Manager, Engineer Nyanda Mlagwa, said the inspection began in July 2025, intending to identify illegal electricity usage and control theft that causes losses to the company and the government.
“I would like to inform the public that to date, the inspection conducted has identified a loss of about Sh4 billion, of which more than Sh1 billion has been paid by customers who were found to be in error, while others continue to pay their debts,” noted Engineer Mlagwa.

He added the revenue generated will be directed towards improving customer services and the implementation of various electricity projects in the country.
In addition, he said some of the errors identified include illegal electricity connections, bypassing of cables before the meter, unauthorized transfer of meters, and tampering with meter seals.
He called on Tanzanians to report vandals through the TANESCO Whistleblower system, which has been emphasized as an effective and safe system to help control acts of vandalism.
The Managing Engineer of the Revenue Control Unit at the Headquarters, Mposheleye Mwasenga, said a total of 1,700 customers during the period under review were found to be using electricity illegally.
He stressed that all estimates have been made accurately based on actual usage and all have been charged debts and fines in accordance with EWURA laws and guidelines.
Warning customers who commit fraud in restoring electricity using axes, the Kinondoni South Regional Revenue Control Engineer, Salumu Mbepei, said that the Corporation is vigilant and has formed a special team to monitor such acts, and that all those who are found will be taken to the strictest legal action.

Damasi Kimaro, an Inspector, has mentioned that one of the biggest challenges they encounter during inspections is that some customers refuse to allow inspections, a situation that hinders the effective implementation of the operation.
He has called on customers to cooperate with inspectors, emphasizing that the exercise is being carried out in accordance with the law and procedures.
The company continues to inform the public that the implementation of the strategy to control revenue loss in the country is ongoing, as part of efforts to ensure the proper use of electricity services and enhance the efficiency of government revenue collection.
