ZANZIBAR: FORM VI students, particularly those studying science combinations, have been urged to take advantage of opportunities available at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) – Zanzibar Campus to meet the global demand for professionals in various fields.
IITM-Zanzibar Director, Prof Preeti Aghalayam, emphasised this while speaking to students from Hasnu Makame Secondary School in Unguja South Region during their visit to the IITM-Zanzibar main campus in the Bweleo area, Unguja West B District.
“The university, established through a partnership between the Zanzibar government and India, offers valuable opportunities in science and technology. Make the most of it,” the Director told the students.
She further explained that IITM presents opportunities not only for students from Africa but also from beyond, as it aims to promote science and technology in developing countries, including Tanzania.
Hasnu Makame Secondary School teacher, Mr Mwalimu Jecha Simai, who accompanied the students, expressed his gratitude to the IIT-Madras management and staff for continuing to invite students to visit the university, encouraging a focus on science subjects.
“These visits motivate students to work harder in science. We believe this will make a difference in the near future,” Mr Simai said.

Students from the secondary school also shared their excitement about the visit, expressing their pleasure at seeing modern science and technology equipment in the labs at IIT Madras.
The one-day visit to the IIT Madras campus involved 68 sixth-form science students and seven teachers from Hasnu Makame Secondary School.
