Statistics Office urge public support to combat road accidents

ZANZIBAR: MEMBERS of the public, especially frequent road users, have been urged to collaborate with Police in the war against road crashes.

Briefing reporters on the monthly road accidents report, a statistician from the Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) in Zanzibar, Mr Ahamada Hassan Suleiman called for cooperation in fighting the challenge in the isles.

“We need to strengthen good relationship between road users and law enforcement organs, this move will help us reduce road accidents,” Mr Suleiman said.

He said that 17 people died in September 2024 due to road accidents, an increase from 14 deaths recorded in August. He noted that the Unguja West B district and the Wete district in Pemba experienced the highest number of accidents, primarily involving pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

“Neglecting to observe road signs, safety regulations, including speeding are contributing to the rise of accidents. I urge drivers to adhere to these regulations. Improved roads should not lead to increased accidents,” he warned.

Mr Omar Hamad Omar, a police officer said various strategies are being implemented to prevent road accidents. These include conducting swift investigations and taking prompt action against drivers who violate road safety regulations.
