Stars get top-level backing as Msigwa, club speakers mobilise fans

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, has issued a call for Tanzanians to fill the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium today as Taifa Stars prepare to face Morocco in the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament.
During a rallying campaign aimed at garnering support for the national team, Msigwa and media and communication managers of Simba and Young Africans underscored the importance of a strong turnout.
Msigwa who also serves as the Chief Government Spokesperson, stated that a packed stadium would not only bolster the players’ morale, but also demonstrate Tanzania’s passion for football to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“We need Tanzanians to come to the stadium in large numbers. Our recent match attendance has been disappointing, which could have serious implications. CAF evaluates a host nation’s preparedness, partly based on fan presence, so it is crucial,” he remarked.
Msigwa also urged supporters to set aside concerns about Morocco’s impressive track record and to have faith in Taifa Stars’ potential to make history.
“We have the chance to win CHAN. Achieving this would not only forge our place in history, but also pave the way for a strong performance in the Africa Cup of Nations,” he stated.
Reiterating the country’s commitment, Msigwa assured fans that Tanzania is well-prepared to overcome any opponent ahead of them. In a show of solidarity, Msigwa confirmed that Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa will be the Guest of Honour at the match, joining many supporters expected to cheer up Taifa Stars.

He also addressed rumours circulating on social media regarding claims that Kenyan fans had purchased all available tickets for the match, labelling them as unfounded.
“Those stories are simply untrue. They spread such claims out of fear,” he said, urging fans to attend the game in large numbers.
“The government has made every necessary preparation to ensure the venue is magnificent,” he added.
Both club representatives underscored the importance of uniting behind the national team, calling for fans to set aside club rivalries for the sake of national pride.
During the press briefing, Simba’s Ahmed Ally underscored that while players can change clubs, they cannot change their national team.
He stressed that one can switch from Simba to Yanga, but nationality cannot be altered. Ally Kamwe from Yanga joined in the call to action, reminding both players and fans that total commitment is essential.
