Stars coach explains absence of star players for Zambia clash

ZANZIBAR: AS the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers against Zambia narrow down, Taifa Stars Head Coach Hemed Suleiman has offered a candid explanation for the surprise exclusion of several high-profile players in the squad.

The match, set to take place next Wednesday at the state-of-the-art New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, is a must-win for Stars as they chase their World Cup dream.

However, a few familiar names will be missing from the 26-man squad unveiled recently, raising eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.

Leading the list of absentees is veteran striker and national team captain Mbwana Samatta, who personally requested to be left out of the squad for the fixture.

Coach Suleiman confirmed the decision, indicating that the 32-year-old forward needed time away from international duty.

Meanwhile, rising star Kelvin John, currently based in Denmark, has been ruled out due to work permit complications that prevent him from travelling outside the country at this time.

His absence is a blow to the team’s attacking options. In addition, seasoned defenders Shomari Kapombe, Mohamed Hussein and promising forward Clement Mzize have also been left out for strategic and fitness-related reasons.

Coach Suleiman emphasised that while these players have contributed immensely in recent years, the technical bench is looking to manage their workloads and inject fresh energy into the team.

The 26-man squad reflects a blend of youthful talent and experienced regulars, with a noticeable emphasis on localbased players who have impressed in the Tanzanian Premier League.

Among the local stars making the cut are: Yakoub Suleiman (Simba SC), Hussein Masaranga (Singida Black Stars), Lusajo Mwaikenda (Azam FC), Israel Mwenda (Young Africans), Bakari Mwamnyeto (Yanga), Elias Lawi (Azam FC) and Wilson Nangu (Simba SC) Their inclusion signifies the coach’s confidence in the domestic league’s growing competitiveness and the players’ readiness to perform at the highest level.

Tanzania’s foreign-based contingent adds depth and international experience.

Key inclusions are: Novatus Dismas (Göztepe FC, Turkey), Charles M’Mombwa (Floriana FC, Malta), Tarryn Allakhan (Rochdale AFC, England) and Edwin Balua (En Paralimniou, Cyprus), Haji Mnoga (Salford City, England) and Miano Danilo (FK Panevėžys, Lithuania) These players are expected to bring tactical versatility and the sharp edge needed to overcome Zambia.

Despite the notable omissions, the squad retains its core leadership and skill with consistent performers such as: Mudathir Yahya (Yanga), Feisal Salum (Azam FC), Iddy Selemani (Azam FC), Abdul Hamis (Azam FC) and Selemani Mwalimu (Simba SC).

Their presence will be vital in anchoring the team’s efforts both in midfield control and attacking transitions. In the fiercely competitive Group E, Tanzania sits second with 10 points from seven matches (3 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw), trailing group leaders Morocco, who have been dominant with a perfect 21 points from 7 matches.

With only the group winners guaranteed a direct ticket to the expanded 2026 World Cup, every point counts and the clash with Zambia is a make-or-break opportunity for Taifa Stars.

Set to be the largest World Cup in history, the 2026 edition will feature 48 nations and will be hosted across USA, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Africa has been allocated nine direct qualification slots, with an additional slot available via intercontinental playoffs. Morocco has already secured its place.
