Stars coach confident in Guinea tie

TAIFA Stars Interim Head Coach, Hemed Suleiman has expressed confidence in their upcoming match against Guinea, stating that he is self-assured they will achieve a positive result.

Coach Suleiman made the remarks yesterday as the team departed for Ivory Coast, ahead of their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixture against Guinea on Tuesday.

Following a goalless draw against Ethiopia in their previous match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Stars are eager to bounce back.

Speaking after a training session at TRA Kurasini ground, Coach Suleiman expressed optimism about their chances.

“I believe we are in good shape and, God willing, we will achieve a positive result against Guinea. We have no injuries, all players are in good health and we have worked hard to address the issues from our last game,” he said.

Coach Suleiman emphasised the importance of respecting every opponent, regardless of respective  circumstances.

“Football is a science and an open game. I don’t underestimate any opponent. Based on my experience, our first match in 2019 ended in a draw as well,” he noted, drawing on his two previous AFCON experiences.

Taifa Stars defensive midfielder, Novatus Dismas, echoed the coach’s sentiments, saying: “There is no pressure on the players right now. We are focused on our preparations and are confident that we can secure a crucial win against Guinea. We aim to position ourselves well in Group H.”

Tanzania’s history in the AFCON has seen them make three appearances to date. Their first was in 1980 in Nigeria, followed by a second appearance in Egypt in 2019 and a third in Ivory Coast in 2023. However, they are yet to advance beyond the group stage.

With their eyes set firmly on qualification, they are determined to leverage their preparations and experience to achieve their goals in this pivotal match.
