COAST REGION: STANDARD Chartered Bank has taken a significant step in combating climate change by planting 2,000 fruit and shade trees at Kigongoni Primary School in Bagamoyo District, Coast region.
The initiative is part of the bank’s ongoing environmental conservation campaign, launched three years ago, aimed at contributing to sustainable development.
It also serves as a long-term educational tool for students and the wider community, promoting awareness of the importance of environmental stewardship.
StanChart Chief Operating Officer, Christopher Vuhahula, these trees will assist the students learning process not only theoretically, but also practically.
“A child in Class One watering a tree will watch it grow until they finish Class Seven and they will appreciate the results of their efforts. “This is education by practice, which they can take home,” Mr Vuhahula, who is also in charge of Technology, said over the weekend.
The lender has planted 6,500 trees since the campaign started three years ago in five schools in Bagamoyo.

The Bagamoyo District Commissioner, Mr Shaibu Ndemanga, thanked the bank for tree planting and providing the seedlings while encouraging other institutions to emulate the efforts.
“Ten years ago, many areas in Bagamoyo were covered by forests, but much of that land has since been heavily deforested. “If we don’t plant more trees, this region will turn into a desert.
Let us continue planting trees. And, our efforts to restore the environment must surpass the damage we have caused in the past,” Mr Ndemanga DC said.
