Some 60 U-17 girls in cricket training camp

DAR ES SALAAM: MORE than 60 probable under-17 girls from all over Tanzania are currently attending a special cricket training camp organised by the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA).

The training started earlier this week in Dar es Salaam and is progressing well, according to TCA Chairman, Balakrishnan Sreekumar.

The camp aims to rediscover a strong national under-17 girls’ team that can compete in upcoming international assignments.

Sreekumar explained that the one-week session will involve training and practice match sessions for the girls under the supervision of four coaches as well as the men and women’s selection committees.

“TCA is camping in Dar es Salam a training and practice match session for 60 probable Under 17 girls from all across the country.

“The mega event started from Tuesday, 2nd April 2024, under the watchful eyes of all the four coaches as well as the men and women’s Selection committee,” Sreekumar said.

The goal is to shortlist 30 probable players who will then undergo rigorous training for a month. After a month, there will be a second selection process, which will reduce the number to 20 players.

“The Selection committee along with the coaches’ recommendation will select the best 14 for the ICC Under-19 Qualifier which will be hosted by Rwanda in August 2024,” explained Sreekumar.

From this group, the Selection Committee, along with recommendations from the coaches, will select the best 14 for the ICC Under-19 Qualifier, which Rwanda will host in August 2024.

Sreekumar was also excited to inform that over 85 per cent of the girls participating in the camp are from upcountry regions, such as Gairo in the Morogoro region, Tanga, Chamwino in Dodoma region, Arusha, Mwanza, and Geita.

This means that cricket is growing at the grassroots levels all across the country.

While the event is massive and expensive, TCA is committed to giving all the players a chance to choose the best from the lot.

Sreekumar encouraged cricket lovers in the country to come and watch the girls in action and give their input to the coaches.

The entire session is being held at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) grounds from 8 am till 3 pm.
