Simbachawene urges Police to uphold integrity

ZANZIBAR: THE Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, has called on police officers and inspectors of all ranks to uphold justice, professionalism and integrity in the execution of their duties.
Speaking at a Police Council meeting held at the Zanzibar Police College, Simbachawene addressed officers from three regions of Unguja, stressing the need for strict adherence to the rule of law, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights in daily policing.
The Minister expressed concern over persistent public complaints regarding some police officers, particularly in handling cases and traffic enforcement.
“You still have challenges in the way some cases are handled. People continue to complain about harassment by certain police officers, including in road traffic operations,” Simbachawene said.

“Let us deal with citizens in accordance with the laws, regulations and professional standards. The Police Force exists to serve and protect the people, not to intimidate them.” He urged officers to exercise fairness and restraint when enforcing the law, warning that misconduct undermines public trust and damages the image of the Police Force.
Zanzibar Police Commissioner, CP Kombo Khamis Kombo, echoed the Minister’s call, urging officers to perform their duties with discipline and professionalism.
“All police officers must execute their responsibilities strictly in line with the law, established procedures and ethical standards,” CP Kombo said, adding that professionalism is key to strengthening public confidence in the Police Force.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Zanzibar, DCP Zuberi Chembela, thanked the Minister for engaging directly with officers and providing guidance on improving service delivery.
“We appreciate the Minister’s directives and guidance. We are committed to implementing all the instructions given to ensure improved performance and positive outcomes in law enforcement,” DCP Chembela said.
The meeting focused on strengthening discipline, improving service delivery and reinforcing ethical conduct within the Police Force as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and trust in Zanzibar.
