Simba Queens derby win boosts title hope
DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA Queens’ head coach, Mussa Mgosi, has hailed his team’s commanding 2–0 victory over rivals Yanga Princess as a crucial step in their quest for this season’s Tanzania Women’s Premier League title.
The win, secured yesterday at the Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam propelled Simba Queens to the top of the league table with 15 points from five matches, asserting their dominance early in the campaign.
For Yanga Princess, the defeat was a significant setback.
The former league leaders slipped to third place with 12 points, while JKT Queens moved into second with 13 points from an equal number of games, intensifying the title race.
Mgosi emphasised the importance of defeating strong rivals in a fiercely competitive league.
“To become champions, you must beat your fellow big teams. The Tanzania Women’s League is highly competitive in every match, but the fiercest battles are between Simba, Yanga and JKT. Securing three points against these giants has certainly made our title ambitions clearer and more achievable,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Yanga Princess head coach Edna Lema attributed the loss to a few costly mistakes, despite her team creating opportunities that went unconverted.
“The mistakes we made were expensive. Our players largely followed the technical bench’s instructions, but luck was not on our side, and we failed to capitalise on the few chances we created,” Lema remarked.
With the league shaping up into a tight contest among the top contenders, Simba Queens’ victory has sent a strong message to their rivals: The race for the crown is on, and they are firmly in the hunt.
