SAMIA@4: Dodoma takes huge leap towards bustling city
FOR the past four years, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dodoma has witnessed remarkable transformation, emerging as one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities.
The development has been driven by the Tanzanian government’s strategic move to shift the capital from Dar es Salaam to the centrally positioned city of Dodoma.
Once a sleepy Dodoma is now a thriving metropolis, bustling with infrastructure projects, growing businesses and a vibrant economy.
The city has become a symbol of economic resilience and strength, thanks to deliberate government’s efforts to transform it into a modern hub for government operations, commerce and industry.
One of the most visible aspects of Dodoma’s transformation is the rapid expansion of its infrastructure. Roads, bridges, and public buildings have been constructed at an unprecedented rate.
The expansion of road networks has been a major focus, including the dual carriageway linking Dodoma to other major regions. This has eased transportation and reduced travel time significantly.
In February 2022, President Samia initiated the construction of a 112.3-kilometer Outer Ring Road to enhance connectivity and support the city’s growth.
As of February 2025, the first section from Nala to Veyula, Mtumba and Ihumwa Dry Port (52.3 km) has reached 91 per cent completion, and the second section from Ihumwa to Matumbulu and Nala (62 km) is at 85 per cent completion.
Speaking to the press recently about the infrastructure achievements of the Sixthphase Government, Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) Director of Planning and Infrastructure, Engineer Ephatar Mlavi, emphasised the government’s plans for road expansion.
He stated that the government intends to extend roads leading to and from Dodoma, covering a total of 220 kilometres. Key roads such as Dodoma – Morogoro, Dodoma – Arusha, Dodoma – Singida, and Dodoma – Iringa are included in the expansion project.
This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and significantly improve transportation services, contributing to the city’s continued growth and connectivity.
The government is also making significant strides in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, further positioning Dodoma as a key railway hub.

Nearly USD 10 billion (equivalent to TZS 23.3 tri) has been invested in the SGR project, which aims to reduce transportation costs and cut travel time for cargo and passengers from nine hours to just 3.5 hours between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. Another milestone in Dodoma’s growth is the construction of Msalato International Airport.
As of February 2025, construction of Msalato International Airport has reached 90 per cent completion, the runway is 84 percent complete, with expectations to finish by June 2025.
The terminal building stands at 51 per cent completion. Once finished, Msalato International Airport will handle up to 1.5 million passengers annually and accommodate large aircraft, significantly enhancing Tanzania’s aviation infrastructure.
In addition to the numerous infrastructure projects, the construction of the Dodoma Arena has been another significant achievement under President Samia’s leadership.
The Dodoma Arena, a state-of-the-art sports and events complex, is being built to cater to international sporting events, cultural performances and conferences, further elevating Dodoma’s status as a key city in East Africa.
The construction of the arena, with a seating capacity of over 20,000, is set to be completed late this year. The project is part of the government’s vision to enhance sports, entertainment, and tourism in the city.
The arena will serve as a venue for a variety of events, including sports tournaments, music festivals and international conferences, boosting Dodoma’s global appeal.
It is expected to contribute to the city’s economic growth by attracting tourists, investors, and sports enthusiasts from around the world.
One of the country’s most ambitious undertakings to date under President Samia leadership is the Government City Project, designed to relocate and centralise all government ministries and key administrative offices in Dodoma.
This transformative initiative is reinforcing Dodoma’s status as the nation’s capital, ensuring more efficient and accessible government operations.
The project includes the construction of ultra-modern government buildings, office complexes, and supporting infrastructure such as water supply systems, electricity grids, and smart city technology.
The initiative is set to enhance service delivery, reduce bureaucratic delays, and establish Dodoma as the heart of Tanzania’s governance.
In line with President Samia’s vision, significant progress has been made in urban planning and housing.
Under the Samia Housing Scheme (SHC), 250 ultramodern residential houses have been constructed to accommodate government employees and residents.
“It is our duty to ensure that Dodoma not only grows but grows inclusively,” President Samia remarked during her visit to new housing projects in 2023.
“Every citizen should have access to a decent home in the heart of our nation’s capital.” Projects focusing on affordable housing are ongoing, contributing to the city’s population growth.
In 2024 alone, thousands of housing units were completed, catering to a diverse range of residents, from government workers to ordinary citizens seeking better living conditions. Dodoma’s economic profile has also shifted considerably.
The city is increasingly seen as a place for economic opportunities, with industries growing alongside infrastructure. Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Kitila Mkumbo, emphasised Dodoma’s economic significance during a speech at an investment forum in April 2024.
“Dodoma is emerging as a commercial center for industries, with the government making it easier for businesses to thrive. This is a city where business opportunities are flourishing, thanks to sound policies and an everimproving infrastructure.”
The city’s thriving industrial sector is attracting both local and foreign investment, further strengthening its economic standing.
The government’s policy of providing incentives to investors has played a major role in creating a conducive environment for businesses. Cultural development in Dodoma has also been prioritised.
The city has become a focal point for cultural activities, including music festivals and art exhibitions, showcasing its rich cultural heritage.
The restoration of historical sites, such as Bunge Hill, Gaddafi Mosque, and Kondoa Rock Art, has boosted tourism, making Dodoma an attractive destination for visitors.
As Dodoma continues to grow, President Samia’s vision for a modern, dynamic capital city seems to be taking shape. The city is well on its way to becoming a symbol of Tanzania’s progress.
