Samia to grace National May Day celebrations

ARUSHA: PRESIDENT Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan will officiate the 2024 International Workers’ Day event to be held at the national level in Arusha on May 1st.

According to the president of the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA), Tumaini Nyamhokya, the theme of this year’s May Day is ‘Salary increment forms the foundation for a better retirement package and provides a cushion against life’s challenges.’

Nyamhokya mentioned that the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium, which will host the event, is currently undergoing renovations to accommodate dignitaries and thousands of people from across the country expected to gather there.

“May Day is the platform where all workers in the country gather to reflect on their working environment and present recommendations for further improvement of working conditions,” said the TUCTA president.

He commended the Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities), Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi, for actively assisting TUCTA in organizing the event.

“The cost of living keeps climbing while salaries remain stagnant,” pointed out the TUCTA president, adding that improved salaries usually come with enriched retirement benefits. Some of the Trade Unions participating in the May Day events in Arusha include Researchers Academician and Allied Workers Union (RAAWU), Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU), Tanzanian Conservation, Hotels, Domestic, and Allied Workers’ Union, CHODAWU.

Tanzania Seamen Union (TASU), Dock Workers’ Union of Tanzania, DOWUTA, Tanzania Local Government Workers Union (TALGWU), Tanzania Mines & Construction Workers Union (TAMICO), Tanzania Railways Workers Union (TRAWU), Tanzania Union of Government and Health Employees (TUGHE), and Tanzania Union of Industrial and Commercial Workers (TUICO) as well as public and private institutions.

Speaking earlier, the RAAWU Chairperson, Ms. Jane Mihanji, pointed out that since the government is the primary employer, it is important to engage with the state and authorities while advocating for workers’ well-being.

Last year, in 2023, Morogoro organized the May Day celebrations, with President Samia also attending. In 2022, the event was held in Dodoma, and in 2021, Mwanza hosted.

Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the May Day public celebration was skipped in 2020. Former President John Magufuli was the guest of honor during the Workers’ Day celebration held at Sokoine Stadium in the Mbeya Region in 2019.
