Samia stresses environmental conservation
MOROGORO: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on citizens across the country to prioritise environmental conservation, to prevent biodiversity loss and safeguard natural resources.
During a rally at CCM-Ifakara grounds in Morogoro Region yesterday, the Head of State also emphasised the importance of preserving water bodies, including rivers, which are vital for human life and socio-economic development.
Addressing the crowd as part of her working visit in the region, President Samia highlighted the critical need to protect the environment for the sustainability of the nation’s natural resources.
She pointed out the damaging effects of economic activities in wetlands, which serve as natural water sources for rivers.
“When you graze in wetland and spring areas, you destroy the natural water sources,” she warned.
“I urge you to conserve the environment. We must preserve our natural resources for both present and future use,” said President Samia.
President Samia said that natural features like the Kilombero Basin, act as water catchment areas for the Great Ruaha River, which, in turn, supports natural vegetation and is crucial for the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP). This major electricity project, under construction, is expected to generate 2,115 megawatts upon completion.

She expressed concern over the rapid disappearance of iconic geographical features in Morogoro Region, such as waterfalls and hillside streams.
Dr Samia recalled how Morogoro’s attractive streams and waterfalls distinguished it from other regions and stressed that their loss signals a need for environmental restoration.
The president attributed part of the ecological disruption in Morogoro to economic activities in wetland areas, which are crucial for sustaining rivers and streams. This has weakened the Kilombero River Valley’s capacity to collect sufficient water.
To address these issues, President Samia announced plans to develop the Kilombero Basin into an irrigation scheme. This will involve collecting floodwater during rainy seasons for agricultural use in dry periods.
“Dams for storing water for irrigation will significantly help control flooding in the basin,” she said. This initiative aims to allow farmers to grow crops twice a year, reducing reliance on rain-fed agriculture and improving their earnings.
President Samia also instructed local leaders, including Ward Councillors and Members of Parliament, to avoid establishing new villages in conservation areas for political gain.
She directed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to take action against those engaging in illegal economic activities in these areas, which are crucial for preserving wildlife and natural resources amid a growing population.
In addition to her environmental conservation message, President Samia reiterated the government’s commitment to providing social services, including health, electricity and transport, as outlined in the CCM Election Manifesto 2020/2025.
She highlighted the positive impact of free education from primary to advanced secondary levels, which has increased access to education for all children. She urged parents to ensure their children attend classes to enhance their academic performance.
Furthermore, President Samia reiterated the government’s commitment to constructing Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) centres in each district in the country to provide practical skills to youth and improve their employability.
President Samia’s working visit to Morogoro Region is scheduled to conclude today.
