Samia mourns former US President Carter

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed her sadness over the death of former US President Jimmy Carter.
The former US president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Carter died on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100 years old.
President Samia on Monday wrote in her X account that President Carter’s life in public service impacted millions of lives across the world.
She said the fallen former US President will forever be remembered as a model for those who aspire to serve their communities, nations and the world with kindness and humility.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend our heartfelt condolences to President Jimmy Carter’s family, the Government and the people of the United States of America on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, May his soul Rest in Peace. Amen,” she wrote in her X account.
US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump led tributes to the fallen Carter who lived longer than any president in the country’s history.
President Biden described his fellow Democrat as “a man of principle, faith and humility,” while Trump said all Americans owe Carter a “debt of gratitude”.

Carter rose from a peanut farmer to become president in 1977, before being forced out of the White House after just one four-year term when Ronald Reagan stormed to victory in the next election.
Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.
After leaving the White House with low approval ratings, his reputation was restored through humanitarian work which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian,” President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement.
Trump posted on Truth Social: “The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.
“For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” he said. Moreover, a financial analyst and ‘Daily News’ columnist, Kelvin Msangi said President Carter’s extraordinary legacy as a statesman, peacemaker, and tireless advocate for the underprivileged transcends borders, uniting us all in shared grief and admiration.
