Samia congratulates Al -Sisi for re-election

TANZANIA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has congratulated Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on his re-election for a new term in the office.

Taking to her official X account, President Samia expressed her best wishes to President Al-Sisi, emphasising her commitment to further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Tanzania and Egypt. She also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in advancing mutual interests and enhancing the relations between the two nations.

“Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to His Excellency, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on starting a new term in office, serving the people of the Arab Republic of Egypt. I am looking forward to continuing working together in fostering the relations between our two countries,” said President Samia on her account. President Abdel Fattah alSisi was sworn in Tuesday for his third term as leader of the Arab world’s most populous nation.

In power for the past decade, the 69-year-old former army chief is set to remain president until 2030. Speaking before parliament, Al-Sisi promised to “remain faithful to my work, my eyes seeing only your interests and this country’s”. He was re-elected in December last year, with 89.6 per cent in a race pitting him against three candidates.

Al-Sisi came to power after the 2013 overthrow of the former president, Mohamed Morsi, who died in 2019 at the age of 67.

Al-Sisi was re-elected in 2018. In both previous elections, he won with 97 per cent of the vote. He extended the presidential mandate from four to six years and amended the constitution to raise the limit on consecutive terms in office from two to three.

Tuesday’s oath also marked the inauguration of Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, located in the desert east of Cairo. Tanzania and Egypt relations are dated back in 1964 Trade volume between the two countries was approximately 40m US dollars in 2020.
