Ruto, envoys describe Lowassa as progressive leader

DAR ES SALAAM: INTERNATIONAL communities and political parties have joined the world to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa.

They described the late Lowassa as a man of wisdom, courage and patriotism, who played a leading role in the country’s development and widely respected internationally.

Through his X handle (formerly Twitter) Kenyan President, Dr William Ruto said Lowassa was a respected and progressive leader, who worked for the greater good of the people of Tanzania and the East African Region.

“We honour the distinguished life that he led, his work and the rich legacy that he leaves behind…May God grant the family, President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the people Tanzania strength at this moment of grief,” President Ruto wrote.

United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr David Concar also wrote in his X handle that Mr Lowassa played a leading role in the life of the nation and was widely respected internationally.

“UK joins hands with President Samia Suluhu Hassan in mourning the passing of former Tanzania PM Edward Lowassa, our condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues,” wrote Mr Concar.

Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) said Lowassa was a strong leader, a smart politician and a strong activist, who was at the forefront of fighting for political and economic changes in the country.

According to a statement issued by CHADEMA’s National Chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe, Mr Lowassa was a man of wisdom, courage, patriotism, compassion, love and forgiveness, adding that he was a man with vision, plans and a good implementer of various development projects for the benefit of the people.

“On behalf of CHADEMA and my fellow Tanzanians, I would like to extend my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all democracy stakeholders following the death of the former Prime Minister, Mr Edward Ngoyai Lowassa,” read part of the statement.

Mr Mbowe said that the country has lost a brave leader, who contributed greatly in building peace, cooperation and social welfare.

“May God rest his soul in peace, forgive him his mistakes and grant him his mercy… May God give comfort, strength and patience to his family, his party, his supporters and all those affected by this death,” the statement added.

Mr Mbowe also said that his party will continue to honour the work, ideas and wisdom left by Mr Lowassa adding that the party will continue to pray for him and remember him for the good he did.

ACT-Wazalendo party said that Lowassa was a leader who served the people and the nation with a cheerful heart in the various positions he held. According to a statement issued by ACT- Wazalendo party, National Chairman, Mr Juma Duni Haji, the nation will remember Lowassa for his contribution to the development of the country.

“On behalf of ACT-Wazalendo party and behalf of myself, I extend my condolences to Mama Regina Lowassa and the entire family, we are with them in this difficult period…I also extend my condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa for this moment of grief for our nation,” read part of the statement.

The former Premier Lowassa passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam. He was aged 70. He is survived by a widow and seven children.
