Rukwa RC pushes for tree planting to curb climate change effects
RUKWA: RUKWA Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Makongoro Nyerere has urged government and private institutions as well as residents to plant more trees in efforts to curb climate change effects.
He argued that planting tree is the best way to address climate change effects, including global warming and drought that undermine agriculture production.
Mr Nyerere made the statement during the launching of tree planting in Sumbawanga over the weekend. The event was attended by staffs from RC and Sumbawanga District offices.
Also in attendance were officials from fire and rescue brigade, Swax jogging team members and wananchi.
“The region is projecting to plant six million trees during this 2023/2024 season,” he stressed
He said in efforts of restoring the vegetation so far 1.8 million trees have been planted in the region.
“We need to have collaborative efforts to mitigate climate change for us to prosper in agricultural production and enhance industrial economy,” Mr Nyerere said.
In the Third Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP- III), the government pledges to continue to strengthen the systems of environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
Sustainable use, protection and well-being of wildlife, forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, valleys, mountains, habitats, land, minerals and precious stones are among the key areas to be considered in the FYDP III, 2021-2026.
