Rooted in faith, raised with love

SONGWE: IN the quiet village of Ikonya, tucked in Bara Ward of Mbozi District, something powerful is happening, parents are being reminded of the critical role faith plays in shaping the next generation.
During a community gathering last Sunday, at Ikonya Catholic Church, the Deputy Regional Crime Investigation Officer for Songwe, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ester Ngaja, spoke to parents and guardians about the importance of raising children with a strong foundation in religious values.
“When we guide our children through faith, we protect them from being drawn into destructive choices, let’s be their example,” she said SP Ngaja called on the church, families, and the entire community to walk this journey together.

According to her, the church should be more than a place of worship, it should be a partner in nurturing character and purpose in the hearts of young people.
The event wasn’t just about words. It was a fundraising drive to complete the church’s roof, which had been left unfinished. Leading the effort was Ms Mariam Nzowa, a proud daughter of the village.
After visiting the church and seeing the congregation praying under open skies, she decided to act. With a goal of raising 7mil/-, she rallied the community, and together they went beyond that target, proof of what unity and a shared vision can accomplish.
The celebration drew religious leaders, villagers, and invited guests, all eager to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Their shared effort brought more than a roof; it brought renewed hope and connection.
Father Attilio Mbogela of Bara Parish commended the people of Ikonya for their dedication and sense of togetherness.
“When parents live by example, children listen without a word. If you want your child to grow with kindness, faith, and purpose, start living those values boldly. Home, after all, is their first and most powerful classroom,” he said.
Father Mbogela encouraged them to keep building not only the church’s walls but also the values that strengthen families and communities.
He thanked the Police Force and Ms Nzowa for their generous support and promised to continue working closely with both local leaders and the wider community.
