Rising human crimes: MNF, EU rally behind Samia

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF) has called on Tanzanians to rally behind President Samia Suluhu Hassan as she addresses serious threats to the nation’s peace and security.

Addressing a press conference held yesterday in Dar es Salaam, MNF Board of Trustees Chairman Mr Joseph Butiku decried rising crimes against humanity, urging citizens to take a strong stand against the growing threats to lives and property.

Mzee Butiku highlighted the disturbing increase in reports of kidnapping, rape, sodomy, abuse and murder.

“According to our Constitution, we have entrusted one leader, the president, with the responsibility of guiding our nation and ensuring the safety and security of all Tanzanians and legitimate visitors. It is our constitutional duty to support the president in fulfilling that duty without hesitation,” Mr Butiku stated.

He called on government officials and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to gather accurate information about those involved in these crimes, so appropriate measures can be taken.

“We cannot ignore the presence of criminals among us; we know who they are. They live within our communities, are part of our law enforcement bodies and attend our churches and mosques. We must ensure that our government is aware of their identities,” Mr Butiku stated.

“The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation urges support for the president in gathering precise information about these wrongdoers to enable effective action,” he added.

Mr Butiku further urged all citizens and leaders to recognise that Tanzania is governed by the rule of law, based on the Constitution and the laws derived from it.

“There is no place for crime in our society. Upholding our laws and Constitution is essential for ensuring peace, unity and development that benefits all citizens,” he said.

He stressed the importance of supporting President Samia without fear by condemning and opposing criminal acts, as every individual has a role in maintaining national unity, peace and stability.

In a related development, the Heads of Mission from the European Union (EU), the British High Commission, the Canadian High Commission and the Embassies of Norway and Switzerland issued a joint statement expressed deep concern over the reported abductions and killings of innocent civilians and called for a thorough investigation into the incidents, extending condolences to the victim’s families.

“We urge the government of Tanzania to ensure the protection of all citizens, as promised by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan’s ‘4R’ plan, and for authorities to act as guardians of the fundamental rights of the people,” the EU statement read.

The EU welcomed President Suluhu’s call for an immediate investigation to identify those responsible and ensure accountability, expressing concern that these recent developments threaten democratic values and the rights of Tanzanian citizens in a country known for its peace and stability.

Additionally, the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), the Bar Association of Tanzania mainland, issued a statement expressing concern over the recent acts of violence and calling on the government to establish an investigative commission to find a lasting solution.
