Relief as Kama-KMKM Road completed

ZANZIBAR: THE completion of the Kama Msikitini – Kama KMKM Road has provided significant relief to residents of Unguja West A District, who had long been relying on dilapidated roads.

Speaking during the inauguration, Minister for Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock, Mr Shamata Shaame Khamis said the government was committed to continue improving the road network across the country.

“The government is fully committed to upgrading and improving all road networks in Zanzibar because good roads are essential for facilitating development,” said Mr Shamata Shaame Khamis.

The event, held in Kama, Unguja West A District, was part of a series of activities ahead of the 61st anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution celebrations, which will culminate on January 12th next year at Gombani Stadium in Pemba.

Mr Khamis emphasised that the initiative was aimed at improving the well-being of citizens, enabling them to engage more effectively in their economic activities. He also highlighted that this year’s Mapinduzi theme is “Peace, Unity and Stability for Our Continuous Development.”

He further noted that the government was investing heavily in road development to improve transportation services and alleviate the challenges faced by both urban and rural communities.

“The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, under the leadership of President Dr Hussein Mwinyi is committed to building all roads at tarmac level to ensure that citizens can travel without difficulties,” Mr Khamis said.

The minister reminded the public that the construction of the Kama Msikitini – Kama KMKM Road was part of the government’s broad efforts to implement the ruling CCM’s 2020-2025 election manifesto as promised by President Mwinyi during his campaign.

“These promises have now been fulfilled, with over 800 kilometres of road networks either under construction or already completed in both Unguja and Pemba,” he explained.

He also urged residents to avoid constructing buildings in road reserve areas to prevent demolitions during future road expansion.

Moreover, he called on motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic signs to help reduce frequent accidents on the roads.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (DPS) of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport Makame Machano Haji commended the contractors—IRIS and Mawi Companies—for completing the road construction on time.

He also urged them to speed up the ongoing inner-road projects to ensure their timely completion.

He mentioned that the cost of constructing the 3-kilometre Kama Msikitini – Kama KMKM Road exceeded 1.7 million US dollar (about 4.1bn/-) and reminded the public to take care of the road by avoiding activities that could damage it.

Several local residents expressed their gratitude for the new tarmacked road, thanking President Mwinyi for fulfilling his promise to provide a road that would support their development and economic activities.
