RC Mtanda: Statisticians to deliver accurate data for national development

MWANZA: MWANZA Regional Commissioner, Mr Said Mtanda, has called on statisticians across the country to ensure they process and release accurate data that will guide communities in making informed decisions for socio-economic development.

He made the remarks yesterday during the commemoration of Africa Statistics Day, attended by experts drawn from Lake Zone regions.

Mr Mtanda said communities rely heavily on official government statistics such as commodity price trends, the availability of agricultural inputs and other essential information to properly plan their daily and long-term activities.

“Accurate plans, information and statistics form the foundation for forecasting future livelihood needs. As experts, you are responsible for conducting research, applying innovation and processing data to produce reliable statistics that give citizens a clear direction,” he said.

He noted that the Tanzania Development Vision 2050 depends on statisticians to establish strong pillars for investment strategies, accountability and broad-based growth across sectors, making quality data a fundamental tool for informed decisionmaking.

He further emphasised that reliable statistics stimulate research and innovation, strengthen the economy and the investment landscape, improve social services, enhance efficiency and help reduce losses.

He also commended the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for successfully conducting the 2022 Population and Housing Census, urging citizens to access census results through official platforms for credible information.

Africa Statistics Day, established in 1990 by the Conference of African Ministers of Economy and Planning, is celebrated this year under the theme: “Promoting Innovation in the Use of Statistics and Information to Build an Inclusive Society.”
