Rally behind Stars – Biteko

DAR ES SLAAM: DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Doto Biteko, has urged all Tanzanians to rally behind the national football team, Taifa Stars, as they prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 tournament this August.

He made the call during opening of the sports stakeholders’ forum aimed at discussing the opportunities surrounding CHAN finals to be staged this year and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Speaking at the forum, Biteko stressed the importance of rallying behind the national team, noting that success in these international competitions starts with strong local support.

He encouraged Tanzanians to attend matches in large numbers to provide moral support and boost the team’s confidence.

“It is crucial that we stand behind our team, especially during this time of preparations, to ensure they perform at their best,” said Biteko, calling for provision of resources to help the team prepare adequately. The CHAN finals tournament will see Tanzania, alongside Kenya and Uganda host the event, bringing together top football talent from across Africa.

The AFCON 2027 tournament, scheduled for 2027, will also provide an opportunity to showcase Africa’s football prowess.

Tanzania’s successful bid to host CHAN finals and AFCON 2027 has been lauded as a major achievement, signalling the country’s growing international stature.

“The recognition comes at a time when Tanzania’s democratic development, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu, is gaining global attention, contributing to the country’s appeal as a destination for major international events,” he said.

The forum also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the roles they can play in maximising benefits of the tournaments.

The government, through Biteko, expressed its gratitude to those who initiated the forum, noting that such discussions are vital for the nation’s preparations.

“As Tanzania gears up for these major sporting events, the government urges all sectors of society to come together and ensure the country capitalises on many benefits these tournaments will bring, not only in terms of economic growth but also in fostering national pride and unity through sport,” he noted.
