Private sector helps Dar Port reap 8.26tri/- in revenue

DODOMA: IMPROVEMENTS and private sector involvement at the Dar es Salaam Port have resulted in an increase in customs revenue collection to 8.26tri/- for the period between July 2024 and February 2025.
Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, revealed this today, May 15, 2025, while presenting the ministry’s budget estimates for the 2025/26 financial year in Parliament.
Prof. Mbarawa said the government has continued partnering with private companies, including DP World and Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited (TEAGTL), to boost port operations.
“The partnerships have facilitated the acquisition of modern equipment and advanced ICT systems that have improved the efficiency of port services,” he said.

He added that the customs revenue from port activities rose by 1.18 tri/- compared to the same period in 2023/24, when it stood at 7 tri/-
The Minister further noted that the average waiting time for vessels at the port has significantly decreased from 46 days to seven days for general cargo ships, and from 10 days to three days for container vessels.
“The average monthly handling capacity of containers has increased from 17,000 TEUs to 25,000 TEUs, reflecting a 47 percent growth,” Prof. Mbarawa explained.
He stressed that these developments are vital for the country’s economic growth and improved service delivery to the public.
Surpringly if the private sector has really done alot, then why there are so many waiting outside some for months? Secondly why there are so many delays in clearing cargo from then port.
