ZANZIBAR: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Regional Commissioner (RC) for Unguja South Region, Mr Ayoub Mohamed Mahmoud, to prioritise resolving the frequent power outages in the area, which are impeding development.
In her brief remarks following the inauguration of the newly developed tourist attraction, Salaam Cave Aquarium in Kizimkazi-Dimbani recently, President Samia highlighted the concerns of local investors regarding unreliable electricity.
“I am pleased to see that the Zanzibar government has acknowledged this issue. An electricity substation is necessary, and a feasibility study for improving the road network in the region is already underway,” President Samia said.
She noted that Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi has directed the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communication and Transport to address the road network issue. However, she urged RC Mahmoud to closely monitor the progress of these improvements.
President Samia expressed her gratitude to Mr Saleh Shaaban, a diaspora developer, for transforming Salaam Cave ormerly a ritual site for locals into a sea turtle conservation centre.
The cave, which features both sea and fresh water, is now a notable tourist attraction.
The opening of Salaam Cave was part of the 2024 Kizimkazi Festival celebrations, which will conclude today (Sunday, August 25, 2024), with President Samia scheduled to close the event.
“Kizimkazi is rapidly evolving, with the festival growing from a village event to a national celebration. The area is experiencing significant social and economic changes, presenting opportunities for employment, especially for youth and women,” President Samia said.

She also addressed land disputes, urging the people of Kizimkazi and neighbouring villages to avoid conflicts. She directed local authorities to improve land governance, ensure designated burial areas and provide fair compensation for properties affected by development.
“We must prevent unnecessary conflicts and ensure that all villagers benefit from Kizimkazi’s development,” President Samia said, thanking NBC Bank and TTCL for sponsoring the day’s activities.
Dr Ashatu Kijaji, State Minister for Union Affairs and Environment, spoke on behalf of Ministers Dr Pindi Chana (Natural Resources and Tourism, Union) and Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga (Tourism and Heritage, Zanzibar).
She commended President Samia and the Kizimkazi community for their environmentally friendly development efforts.
RC Mahmoud informed the enthusiastic crowd that the Kizimkazi Festival is boosting tourism in the region, which now features around 17 tourist attractions.
He noted an increase in both domestic and international visitors.
