DODOMA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the 79th International Military Sports Council (CISM) General Assembly and Congress to be held from May 12th to 19th in Dar es Salaam.
This is the second time that Tanzania is hosting CISM after successfully staging it in 1991 in Arusha Region after joining the congress in 1973 until to date.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Major General Francis Mbindi revealed on Tuesday in Dodoma that Tanzania will once again host the CISM event which will engage military personnel from 140 member countries.
“In Africa, there are 47 member states of CISM, but Tanzania has been picked as a hosting nation because we have met all criteria required by the CISM constitution and we are able to provide demanded services with ease.
“Also, the prevailing peace and tranquility in the country have enabled us to host the event for the second time,” Major General Mbindi said while appealing to all Tanzanians to support the preparations of the upcoming congress.
He continued: “This is a great opportunity for our country as participants, where visitors will have a chance to visit various tourist attractions thereby promoting the country’s tourism sector.
“Also, our Kiswahili language will be promoted as it is among the five official languages to be used during the congress alongside English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
” Again, Mbindi highlighted that Tanzanian traders should be ready to take advantage of this opportunity by providing services that the military personnel will need throughout their stay in the country.
He added that CISM is conducted annually and rotationally among all continents of the world, saying that in 2022, it was the turn of South America as Peru hosted it in the city of Lima.
“In 2023, it was conducted in Europe and Russia staged it in the city of Moscow…this year, it is the turn of Africa and Tanzania will host it in Dar es Salaam,” he explained.
According to him, the continent of Asia will stage the 2025 CISM edition with Sri Lanka hosting the congress in the city of Colombo.
Established in 1945 after World War II, CISM aims to use sports activities and physical education to promote world peace and its motto is “Friendship through Sports.”
