President Samia orders flags to fly at half-mast to mourn Lowassa

TANZANIA: Following the passing of former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has issued an order for Tanzania’s flag to be flown at half-mast, alongside declaring a five-day national mourning period.

Vice President Dr Philip Mpango conveyed this announcement via the national broadcaster TBC on Saturday afternoon.

Subsequently, President Samia took to social media platforms to express her deepest condolences, characterizing Lowassa as a smart and committed leader who dedicated over 35 years to public service.

She extended her sympathies to Lowassa’s widow, Mama Regina Lowassa, his children, including Monduli MP Fredrick Lowassa, and other relatives, friends, and Tanzanians at large.

Emphasizing solidarity during times of grief, she urged them to find solace in faith, referencing a passage from the Book of Job (1:21).

Former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa passed away on Saturday at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam, where he was undergoing treatment for a long-standing illness, as detailed by Vice President Philip Mpango and a family member.
