Majaliwa forms task force to assess Kariakoo building safety

DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has formed a 19-member task force to assess the structural integrity of all buildings in the Kariakoo area.
The move follows instructions from President Samia Suluhu Hassan and comes in the wake of the tragic collapse of a building on November 16, which claimed 16 lives while others were rescued from the rubble.
The task force will be led by Brigadier General Hosea Maloda Ndagala, Head of the Disaster Management Department in the Prime Minister’s Office, with Engineer Melecky Mwano from the Contractors Registration Board (CRB) serving as its secretary.

Speaking on during a farewell ceremony for the victims at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Kariakoo, Prime Minister said the task force will play a critical role in identifying the condition of the buildings and advising the government on the next steps.
“Kariakoo is an international marketplace relied upon by neighboring countries. We must strengthen its infrastructure and ensure the safety of the buildings so that entrepreneurs can continue their operations”, he said.
He added: “The task force’s findings and recommendations will guide the government in implementing new safety standards and measures.”
