Port expansions set to open more trade opportunities

KAGERA: RESIDENTS of Kagera Region are being urged to tap into business opportunities arising from the renovation and expansion of Kemondo and Bukoba ports.
The government has allocated over 60bn/- for the significant infrastructure projects on Lake Victoria.
Speaking to reporters in Bukoba over the weekend, District Commissioner Erasto Sima highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the region’s economic prospects.
“Once renovations are complete, the transport of people and goods will increase, significantly boosting the city of Bukoba. I encourage the people of Kagera, especially those in Bukoba District, to stay prepared to engage in business effectively at our ports,” Sima stated.
He noted that while improvements are underway, local residents, particularly the youth near the ports, are already benefiting from job opportunities and various businesses, including food sales and security services.
Sima explained that although the existing port infrastructure had begun to deteriorate, vessels continue to anchor there and to address this, the government has set aside substantial funds for the renovations.
Victoria Lake Port Manager Erasto Lugenge recently reported that the expansion project includes three ports, with Mwanza North already over 40 per cent complete.
Improvements at Mwanza will feature a new passenger waiting area, perimeter fencing, roads, durable flooring, a customs inspection facility and an expanded dock.
The overall construction and expansion of the three ports are expected to take 18 months, with completion anticipated by early next year.
