Police nab two over SGR train vandalism

DODOMA: Police have arrested two individuals accused of throwing stones at a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train.
The incident reportedly caused damage to two train windows and jeopardized the safety of passengers.
The event occurred on November 22, 2024, at Manase Village in Chamwino District, Dodoma , as the train traveled from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma.
Dodoma Regional Police Commander confirmed the arrest of Erasto Michael Richard, 16, and Hassan Ezekiel Ndahani, 12, both residents of Manase Village.
According to the police, the suspects admitted to throwing stones at the train out of curiosity, attempting to see if their stones could match its speed.
Following the incident, a manhunt was conducted, leading to their apprehension.
Authorities expressed concern over such actions, emphasizing the dangers and legal repercussions of damaging public infrastructure.
“We urge citizens, especially those living near SGR routes, to understand the importance of protecting this vital infrastructure, which serves the entire nation. Parents and guardians should take responsibility for educating children about the consequences of vandalism,” the police stated.
The police also called for community collaboration in safeguarding the railway and warned that further acts of vandalism would be met with strict legal measures to ensure the safety and continuity of modern transport services.
