KATAVI: POLICE in Katavi region have arrested more than 56 suspects for allegedly poaching and breaking into houses.
Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Ms Kalister Ngonyani told journalists yesterday that the suspects were arrested in various areas in an ongoing operation in the region.
She said many of suspects were arrested in Mlele, Mpanda and Tanganyika districts.
The RPC explained that all 56 suspects will be arraigned when the investigation is completed.
According to the RPC, four people suspected to be poachers were arrested for illegal possession of 25 kilograms of buffalo meat.
Also 17 suspects were arrested for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing various belongings.
“The suspects were found with various stolen items including six ‘sandarusi’ bags, a welding machine, TV set, 121 rollers of wires meant for fencing building of TTCL, two motor bikes with registration numbers MC 115 CMQ Hayoie type and MC 505 DNE KingLion type and a radio,” she said.
The RPC added that other stolen items on the list are motor for cereal processing machine – AMEC type, four bags of Yara and Falcon fertilisers ” she added.

She explained that eleven suspects were nabbed for allegedly possessing marijuana while 24 suspects were apprehended for allegedly possessing 124 litres of illicit brew ‘gongo’.
The RPC said criminal acts have dropped in the region thanks to the ongoing police operation and patrols in the region.
According to the RPC, police also seized various weapons used by suspects to commit crimes in the region.
“This operation has succeeded due to great cooperation from citizens, we acknowledge their contribution and ask them to continue working closely with police so that together we can end crime in the region,” she said.
The RPC also sent a strong message to the criminals saying they must find other legal income earning activities.
