DAR ES SALAAM: POLICE in Dar es Salaam have arrested four people suspected of involvement in the murder of Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) driver Iman Simbayao.
The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro told reporters yesterday that the suspects are accused of attacking TRA officials who were trying to impound a smuggled vehicle in Tegeta kwa Ndevu area in Dar es Salaam.
“We are interrogating the suspects in connection with the murder of Simbayao. The deceased was among three TRA officials attacked by residents in Tegeta kwa Ndevu, Dar es Salaam, while attempting to impound a vehicle allegedly smuggled into the country,” said SACP Muliro.
On Friday, TRA announced that Simbayao who was among three officers attacked by residents in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam had passed away.
According to the statement, the officer passed away while receiving treatment at Muhimbili national Hospital (MNH).
“Simbayao passed away at Muhimbili National Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after he was attacked while on duty in the Tegeta kwa Ndevu area in Dar es Salaam. We expect all those responsible to be brought to justice,” TRA’s statement reads in part.
The attack on Simbayao and his two colleagues occurred on the night of December 5, 2024, while they were in a government vehicle. It is reported that the perpetrators believed that Simbayao and his colleagues were kidnappers when the incident happened.
SACP Muliro has warned citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
