The project, which began on March 8th, 2022, was completed on August 15th, last year and is now supplying clean water to 24,349 residents across the villages of Hungumalwa, Buyogo, Ilula and Kibitilwa, using water drawn from Lake Victoria.

Mr Majaliwa encouraged households which are not connected to electricity, to take advantage of the ongoing national electrification efforts.

Mwanza Regional Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) Manager Engineer Godfrey Sanga said the water scheme was executed by Emirate Builders Company Ltd under the supervision of RUWASA engineers.

The project contract was valued at 11bn/-, of which 10bn/- has been disbursed.

The visit comes just days after Water Minister Jumaa Aweso presented the 2025/26 budget of 1.016tri/- for his ministry before the National Assembly. The budget was unanimously approved by the House.

This represents a 62 per cent increase from the 627.78bn/- allocated in 2024/25.

Other priorities include finalising the National Water Master Plan, drilling new boreholes and developing water sources, enhancing water quality monitoring systems and promoting rainwater harvesting.

A key component of the long-term plan is the National Water Grid, which aims to connect major water bodies to regions with chronic shortages.

“Strategic interventions include supplying water from Lake Victoria to Dodoma and Singida, Lake Tanganyika to Kigoma, Katavi and Rukwa, the Ruvuma River to Mtwara and Lindi and the Rufiji River to Dar es Salaam and Coast regions,” said Mr Aweso.
