PM: Quality education is our path to prosperity

LINDI: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has said that advancing the education sector is key to achieving national development and long-term prosperity.

Speaking during a ceremony to congratulate Form Six students at Lucas Malia Girls Secondary School in Ruangwa District, Lindi Region, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to quality education for all.

“In recognising the critical role of education, the sixth phase government, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, made a strategic decision to invest heavily in the sector, to ensure that every Tanzanian child has access to quality education at all levels,” he said.

Addressing students and teachers, Mr Majaliwa encouraged continued academic excellence and commitment.

“To all current and incoming students, know that we are committed to providing you with robust and quality education. The knowledge and skills you acquire will empower you to address various social and economic challenges,” he said.

He also noted that the government has reformed the education curriculum to align with global economic trends and address youth unemployment.

“These reforms are designed to ensure that students graduate with practical skills and the ability to transform their lives economically using their environment and acquired knowledge,” the Prime Minister added.

The school’s Deputy Headmaster Amon Chalamila said that all 188 students registered for the 2025 Form Six national examinations sat and passed.

“Ninety students achieved Division One, 95 obtained Division Two and three students scored Division Three. No student scored Division Four or Zero, resulting in a collective GPA of 2.34,” he said.

Over the past four years, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has led transformative reforms in the education sector, recognising its vital role in shaping Tanzania’s future.

From curriculum modernisation to expanding infrastructure, Dr Samia’s administration has improved access, enhanced the quality of education and aligned learning with labour market demands.

One of the major milestones was the introduction of the updated 2014 Education and Training Policy (2023 Edition), which shifts the education system towards competency-based learning.

Extensive curriculum reforms have been introduced across pre-primary, primary, secondary and teacher training institutions, with phased implementation beginning in January 2024.

To support these reforms, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology developed several new guidelines, including the Home-Schooling Guide, the Home-Visit Guide and various tools to assess and support learners with special needs.

These measures aim to strengthen inclusive education and ensure equitable learning for all.

The government has also prioritised gender equality in education through the National Girls’ Education Initiative.
