PM Majaliwa urges Tanzanian student to expand sanitary pad distribution efforts

DODOMA: The Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called upon 16-year-old Arjun Mittal, founder of the HERNEEDS program, to expand her initiative to distribute sanitary pads across Tanzania, offering government support to help her reach more students.

Mittal, a Tanzanian student based in Dubai, has already raised over $60,000 to provide more than 10,000 sanitary pads to students in 33 secondary schools in Arusha. During a recent meeting at the Parliament grounds in Dodoma, Prime Minister Majaliwa expressed admiration for her efforts, particularly at such a young age, and invited her to extend the project to other regions.

“You are young, but your achievements are remarkable,” said Majaliwa. “I encourage you to visit schools in my constituency, Ruangwa, and other regions to distribute more sanitary pads. If you need support, I am here to help.”

Mittal responded positively, expressing her intention to engage with students in Dubai to raise additional funds for the project. She acknowledged the challenges of reaching many students but affirmed her commitment to making a lasting impact.

“Many students miss several days of school each month due to the lack of sanitary pads. Through HERNEEDS, I am determined to help as many as I can,” Mittal said.

In addition to her efforts on the ground, Mittal, accompanied by her father, Atul Mittal, has appealed to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, to advocate for the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on sanitary pads, making them more affordable for girls across the country.

Prime Minister Majaliwa’s support for Mittal’s initiative underscores a growing national focus on addressing menstrual health and improving access to essential hygiene products for students across Tanzania.
