PM calls for Kiswahili experts’ sponsorship programme

MBEYA: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to prepare a special sponsorship programme for Kiswahili language experts at the doctoral level.

He said the objective is to meet the needs and strengthen language training to produce Kiswahili experts and translators with international standards.

Mr Majaliwa made the directive on Monday during the fourth symposium of World Kiswahili Services. The symposium, which opened on Monday in Mbeya Region, brought together media stakeholders to discuss the content of media broadcasting in the Kiswahili language held in Mbeya.

The PM said that the government continues to take several steps to promote the Kiswahili language, including preparing a national strategy to make Kiswahili a commodity.

He said that the strategy aims to make the Kiswahili language able to provide opportunities for people to grow economically, the sale of Kiswahili professions, promote and strengthen Kiswahili teaching techniques, the sale of Kiswahili publications and the sale of human resources including translators, editors and artists.

According to the Prime Minister, the government continues to ensure that embassies have centres to spread Kiswahili abroad, including the opening of new Kiswahili teaching centres in various countries like Holland, the United Arab Kingdoms, Germany, Zimbabwe, Dubai, Italy, Comoro, France, Nigeria, Turkey and Korea.

He said that the government has also provided training to the Tanzanian diaspora living abroad to enable them to understand the techniques of teaching Kiswahili as a foreign language in the countries.

“According to the information I have, diasporas have received training and continue to teach foreign languages in the countries where they live. These strategies enable Kiswahili to build economic diplomacy and increase the scope of employment for Tanzanians living abroad,” he said.

The Prime Minister also instructed journalists to adhere to legal principles and regulations on writing and broadcasting activities while protecting the requirements of using the Kiswahili language.

“I urge media owners and journalists to use this forum to ensure that they educate and convince the public to use Kiswahili correctly and to pay attention to Kiswahili grammar,” he said.

He said that many advertisements and news are broadcast in the media with mistakes in the use of the Kiswahili language, including pronunciation, incorrect translations from foreign languages and a lack of ethics in the use of the Kiswahili language.

However, the PM directed the National Kiswahili Council, BAKITA and Zanzibar Kiswahili Council, BAKIZA to prepare and implement training programmes for various groups, including editors, translators, interpreters, teachers, entertainers, secretaries, book writers and other groups that use and spread Kiswahili so that they can have a broad understanding of the use of Kiswahili correctly.

“The communication documents of the ministries, departments and their institutions should be written in the standard Kiswahili language… Meetings, conferences, seminars and public discussions should be conducted in Kiswahili,” he added.
