PM awards Simbu 20m/- for winning a gold medal in the IAAF Marathon

DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has presented a 20m/= cheque to Alphonce Simbu  in recognition of his outstanding performance in the IAAF World Athletics Championship.

Simbu, who won the 42km marathon in a photo finish, raised the Tanzanian flag on the global stage.

The award ceremony took place today, September 27, 2025,  at the Kibo Hall in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dar es Salaam, and was attended by various government officials, athletes, and key stakeholders in the sports sector.

The prize was issued by the National Sports Council (NSC ) on behalf of the government as part of efforts to encourage and recognize Tanzanian athletes who bring pride to the country through international competitions.

Speaking during the event, Prime Minister Majaliwa congratulated Simbu for his discipline, patriotism, and unwavering dedication that led to his historic victory in the 42-kilometre marathon held recently in Tokyo, Japan.

“Simbu has shown us that victory begins with preparation, discipline, and a strong sense of commitment. The government will continue to support athletes who bring honor to our nation,” said Majaliwa.

In response, Simbu expressed his gratitude to the government for the recognition and support, noting that the reward serves as a strong motivation for him and fellow athletes to continue striving for excellence.

“This is a big motivation for me and other athletes. I am grateful for this gift, and I promise to continue fighting for my country,” said Simbu, visibly elated.

Also speaking at the event, the NSC Executive Secretary, Neema Msitha emphasized that the reward is just the beginning of a broader government initiative aimed at investing more in sports and ensuring top-performing athletes receive the motivation they deserve to keep excelling.
