PCCB urges voters to value their votes
ARUSHA: THE Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Arusha Region has called on voters to understand the significance of their votes in shaping their futures by electing responsible leaders.
Speaking during a training session for journalists in preparation for the upcoming Local Government elections in November, PCCB’s Arusha Regional Head, Ms Zawadi Ngailo, reminded participants that some political candidates may resort to bribery to influence voters.
She urged citizens to recognise the harmful effects of corruption and to resist the manipulation of dishonest candidates seeking political gain.

“Citizens have a responsibility to report corruption to the PCCB and cooperate fully during investigations, allowing the bureau to verify allegations and take legal action against offenders,” said Ms Ngailo.
According to her, corrupt practices like voter bribery undermine the electoral process and result in the election of incompetent leaders, contrary to the voters’ will.
“This November, our country will hold Local Government elections, and one of the PCCB’s roles is to educate the public about corruption and its impacts.
We also aim to mobilise citizens to actively participate in the fight against corruption by reporting corrupt activities,” she stated.
Ms Ngailo highlighted several areas prone to corruption during elections, including candidate nominations, campaigning, voting, vote tallying and handling complaints.
“Corrupt acts during elections can involve cash distribution, giveaways like kanga, t-shirts, food and drinks, promises of employment or loans and even threats to coerce individuals into voting in a specific way,” she explained.
She reminded citizens that engaging in corrupt activities during elections is a legal offence, punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, a fine not exceeding 500,000/-, or both penalties combined.
