Over 300 participants, nine ambassadors set to climb Mt K’njaro

KILIMANJARO: OVER 300 participants, including nine ambassadors representing Tanzania abroad, are expected to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this year as part of the fourth season of the 2024 Twenzetu Kileleni campaign, which aims to promote domestic tourism.

Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation and Head of the Northern Zone at Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Betrita Lyimo said on Tuesday during the flag-off event for participants of the Lemosho route that the event is expected to promote tourism and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

“This marks a significant increase compared to the 215 participants who took part in last year’s campaign. The Twenzetu Kileleni campaign not only celebrates the 63rd anniversary of Tanganyika’s independence, but also aims to promote domestic tourism by showcasing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, along with other tourist attractions in Tanzania,” said Ms Lyimo.

She further emphasised that the campaign also honours the foundational work of Tanzania’s conservation efforts, particularly those established by the country’s founding leaders, including the first president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The goal is to ensure that Tanzania’s natural resources are preserved sustainably for the benefit of both current and future generations.

“As was the case last year, this year’s campaign will involve three popular routes up Mount Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Machame and Marangu,” she said.

Ms Lyimo also outlined the schedule saying participants using the Lemosho gate began their journey on Tuesday, those using the Machame gate will start on Wednesday, and those using the Marangu gate will begin on Thursday.

All climbers are expected to reach the peak of Uhuru on Independence Day, December 9, 2024, before descending together from the mountain.

The ambassadors taking part in the climb represent Tanzania in Brazil, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Kuwait, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Qatar, Japan and Egypt.

Siha District Commissioner and the guest of honour at the event, Dr Christopher Timbuka praised the stakeholders who contributed to the success of the campaign.

“This campaign is crucial for promoting Tanzania both locally and internationally, making a significant contribution to the growth of tourism by involving both Tanzanians and visitors from abroad. Your contributions are invaluable,” said Dr Timbuka.

Earlier, CEO of African Scenic Safaris Company Mr Simbo Natai commended the government for creating a favourable environment for tourism investments in the country.

“Last year, we had 11 participants on the Lemosho route; this year, we have 24 climbers taking part,” Mr Natai stated.
