Oman to fund modern hospital project in Zanzibar
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is set to establish a modern regional hospital in the Mahonda area of Unguja North, thanks to a funding promise from the government of Oman.
This announcement was made at the Zanzibar State House, where President Hussein Mwinyi met with the Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs of Oman Mr Khalid Almuslahi.
Dr Mwinyi stated that the construction of the hospital represents a significant step toward the government’s goal of having a modern hospital in each region of the islands.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality of healthcare services and alleviate congestion at the current referral facility, Mnazi Mmoja Appeal Hospital.
He expressed gratitude to the government of Oman for its enduring support in various sectors, including technical, professional and financial assistance.
“We promise to maintain our strong relationship with Oman for the benefit of our people,” Dr Mwinyi assured Mr Almuslahi as they discussed other projects supported by Oman in Zanzibar.
One notable project is the restoration of the ‘House of Wonders,’ which collapsed on Christmas Day in 2020.
Mr Almuslahi also committed to further supporting efforts to preserve Zanzibar’s Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that plays a crucial role in the region’s economic growth.
“Let us continue to work together to maintain and develop Stone Town. Not only it is the administrative capital, but it also serves as a significant tourist attraction that contributes to the economic prosperity of Zanzibar and its people,” Mr Almuslahi said.
