Ocean Road marks 30-year excellence in the fight against cancer

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has invested over 40bn/- over the past four years through the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) to in its broader commitment to improve cancer treatment.

The investment aims to improve cancer treatment infrastructure and fund the training of healthcare professionals as part of a broader national effort to strengthen the fight against cancer.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam ahead of ORCI’s 30th anniversary celebrations, which will also feature the launch of a new website and an international cancer symposium, ORCI Executive Director Dr Diwani Msemo said the substantial investment is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to saving lives by ensuring the availability of modern, high-quality cancer care that meets today’s medical needs.

The anniversary celebrations will be held under the theme: “30-Year Journey of Improving Cancer Services” and will include a special symposium that is expected to bring together more than 600 participants, including policymakers, cancer survivors, and medical and radiation experts from within and outside the country.

The symposium will take place in Dar es Salaam at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) from February 4 to 6, 2026. Participants will discuss various topics, including strategies for cancer prevention, control, and treatment improvement. The event will also feature educational programs broadcast through media outlets to raise public awareness about cancer and its risks.

Representing the Ministry of Health, Dr. Asha Mahita highlighted that the government’s substantial investment in the health sector has contributed to Tanzania’s growing ability to receive patients from outside the country. She added that efforts are ongoing to educate the public on cancer prevention and to improve access to treatment for all.

The upcoming celebrations are expected to strengthen both national and international collaboration in the fight against cancer, with ORCI reaffirming its dedication to delivering quality care for decades to come.
