Nkya clinches third straight Lina PG tour title

DAR ES SALAAM: PROFESSIONAL golfer Fadhil Nkya from Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club emerged victorious in the third season of the Lina PG Tour — a tournament held in memory of the late Lina Nkya, a former national golf team player.

Mr Nkya topped the professional category, securing his third consecutive win in the event, while Abdallah Yusufu took second place. In the junior division, Jay Nathwani of Arusha Gymkhana Club claimed the top spot, showcasing promising talent among young golfers.

The tournament, which concluded yesterday at the scenic TPC golf course in Moshi, Kilimanjaro, drew over 130 participants from various clubs across Tanzania.

It has grown into a prestigious fixture on the national golf calendar, bringing together professional players, emerging juniors, and amateurs alike.

Reflecting on his victory, Nkya attributed his consistent performance to rigorous training and dedication.

“This is the third time in a row I’ve won this competition. The secret is simple — I train hard, stay consistent, and never give up,” he said.

Mr Nkya praised the Lina PG Tour not only as a tribute to a golfing legend but also as a critical platform for developing competitive skills ahead of national and international events.

“I’ve taken part in all six editions since it began. This tournament has become one of the most important in the country, helping us prepare effectively for other competitions,” he added.

He also urged Tanzanians to move past the perception that golf is a sport reserved for the wealthy.

“Golf is for everyone. With passion and persistence, anyone can learn and become a great player. I’ve been training juniors, many for free, to widen access to the game and build the next generation of golfers,” Nkya emphasised.

Junior winner Nathwani echoed Nkya’s sentiments, stressing the importance of discipline and practice.

“Golf is not easy — it’s a tough sport. But with enough practice and commitment, anyone can succeed. There’s no magic — just hard work,” he said.

He also applauded the organisers for giving young players a platform to grow and compete.

Amateur golfer Meja Chediel Msechu of Lugalo Golf Club commended the tournament for its role in nurturing local talent and raising competitive standards.

Event organiser Said Nkya, husband to the late Lina, expressed his gratitude to all participants and the TPC Club, pledging continued efforts to grow the tournament’s impact.
