NIDA marks world identity day with registration drive

DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Identification Authority (NIDA) has renewed its call for Tanzanians to register for national identity cards, insisting the vital role the ID plays in enabling citizens to access essential services and participate fully in the country’s social and economic activities.

The appeal was made recently in Temeke District, where NIDA joined the global community in commemorating World Identity Day.

Speaking on behalf of the NIDA Director General, the Authority’s Director of Finance and Administration, Mr George Seni stressed the importance of every eligible Tanzanian obtaining the national ID.

“Having a national ID is not just a formality. It is a crucial tool that allows citizens to be recognised in all areas of life, whether accessing financial services, education, healthcare, or business opportunities,” Mr Seni told reporters.

He noted that the government remains committed to making registration services available and accessible to all, without discrimination.

At the same event, Mr Edson Guyai from NIDA headquarters revealed significant progress in the Authority’s work, revealing that over 26 million Tanzanians have been issued national identity cards to date.

“This is a major milestone in strengthening our national database and ensuring that Tanzanians are properly identified both within and outside the country,” said Mr Guyai.

He also said that the issuance of IDs remains free of charge, urging citizens to take full advantage of the service.

According to NIDA, the national identity card is increasingly required across multiple sectors. Banks, telecommunication companies, health insurers and government agencies are integrating ID verification into their systems to reduce fraud and improve efficiency.

Officials reminded the public that possession of a national ID is not only important locally but also vital in a rapidly digitising world. The national identity database positions Tanzania to participate more effectively in regional and global networks where secure identification and verification are essential.

World Identity Day, observed annually on September 16, raises awareness about the role of legal identity in advancing human rights, socio-economic development and good governance.

Tanzania’s commemoration in Temeke highlighted achievements made so far and challenges ahead, especially ensuring that people in remote and underserved areas can easily access registration services.

This year’s theme was ‘My Identity, My Umbrella.’

NIDA reaffirmed its commitment to expanding outreach and urged local leaders, community organisations and citizens to actively spread the message. “We must all recognise the value of identity and make sure that no one is left behind,” Mr Seni concluded.
