New Uongozi Institute Board tasked with securing sustainability

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister of State in the President’s Office (Public Service Management and Good Governance), Mr George Simbachawene has challenged the newly appointed Board of Directors of the Uongozi Institute to expand the Institute’s financial network and secure its long-term financial stability.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new board to be led by former Chief Secretary, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, the minister said the new board should proactively seek new financial partnerships and implement sustainable funding strategies by reaching out to other African countries, development partners and business organisations.

“The intention has always been that eventually, other African governments, development partners, foundations and like-minded business organisations join in and contribute to the Institute’s prosperity. It is my hope that the new Board of Directors will work to expand the Institute’s financial networks and ensure its financial sustainability,” he said before inaugurating the new board of directors.

The minister expressed optimism that the new board appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in October, will build on the foundation laid by its predecessors, advancing the Institute’s mandate and driving its vision of a prosperous, equitable and sustainable Africa.

He said the new board is expected to prioritise the Institute’s growth and sustainability, enhancing its agility and resilience which will involve expanding their reach to local and regional leaders across the continent.

The new board is poised to propel the Institute to new heights of growth and sustainability by expanding the reach to local and regional leaders, he said. He urged the new board to uphold the Institute’s commitment to delivering high-quality products and services, emphasising that standards and quality must never be compromised.

The new board is expected to secure adequate resources to implement the Institute’s agenda and to effectively communicate its achievements, outcomes, and long-term impact to enhance its reputation, the minister said.

The chairman of the board, Amb Sefue expressed profound gratitude to President Samia for the bestowed trust to lead Uongozi Institute and expressed their excitement and readiness to propel Uongozi Institute to new heights of sustainable development.

‘We are deeply honoured and privileged to have been entrusted with this responsibility,” he said.

Amb Sefue said the Institute has made significant strides in addressing Africa’s leadership challenges in the past three years and singled out Women Leadership programme designed to enhance their ability to make strategic choices, lead people and resources and excel in personal and leadership qualities.

“Over the past three years, the Institute has tackled fundamental leadership challenges in Africa. The main highlight to me is the dynamic Women Leadership programme, which empowers women to excel in high-level decision-making roles,” he said.

Apart from Amb Sefue, the new board comprises of Finnish Ambassador in Tanzania, Theresa Zitting, former Finnish Ambassador Dr Laura Torvinen and former Director General of the Institute of Public Administration – Ireland, Dr Brian Cawley.

Others are former Tanzanian High Commissioner to South Africa, Maj Gen. (Rtd.) Gaudence Milanzi, former Tanzania’s Ambassador to France, Begum Taj, Prof Samuel Wangwe, retired Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam, Dr Hamisi Mwinyimvua, Senior Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Art and Sports, Ms Susan Mlawi.

The Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development, commonly known as UONGOZI Institute, is a regional leadership development hub operating under the Office of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Established in 2010 by the Governments of Tanzania and Finland, the Institute is dedicated to inspiring and equipping African leaders to deliver inclusive and sustainable solutions for their nations and the wider continent.
