DODOMA: In a major milestone for Tanzania’s transportation sector, the new Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train commenced official service on Friday, completing its inaugural three-hour journey from Dar es Salaam to Samia Station in Dodoma.
This advanced electric train, distinct from other electric trains, features multiple units with a capacity to carry 589 passengers at once, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour.
The EMU train is part of the ongoing Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, which aims to revolutionize transit efficiency and safety across the two major cities in Tanzania.
Dodoma Regional Commissioner Ms. Rosemary Senyamule welcomed the first 320 passengers who arrived at Dodoma’s Samia Station aboard the train.
Addressing journalists in the country’s capital, the RC stated that the improved service has stimulated other local businesses, including hotels.

According to the regional official, Dodoma receives an estimated 3,000 passengers daily from various parts of the country, traveling by multiple modes of transport.
The first phase of the SGR trip, connecting Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, was officially launched in mid-June 2024 and extended to Dodoma in July.
Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, reported in Parliament on Friday that the Tanzania Railway Corporation has seen impressive growth since the introduction of the Standard Gauge Railway service.
He stated that in the last three months, TRC transported 645,621 passengers, generating 16.95bn/- as of September.
Prof Mkumbo also highlighted that preliminary assessments indicate the SGR is driving substantial transformation in the country’s transport sector, adding that it has brought pride to Tanzanians who are thrilled to travel on advanced, high-speed trains.
