New entries,  women MPs herald the General Elections results

DODOMA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that the 2025 General Election has brought major changes, with an increased number of women winning constituency seats as well as a rise in the number of women in special seats.

Inaugurating the parliament in Dodoma on Friday, the President said that statistics show that 223 out of 393 Members of Parliament, equivalent to 56 percent, are completely new MPs where 45 percent are women.

She said that the move is making the country get closer to 50 percent representation of women in the parliament.

Elaborating, she noted that this year, 36 women contested constituency seats compared to 21 in the previous Parliament.

Moreover, President Samia commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),for successfully managing the general election for its first time since the commission was restructured.

According to the President, the decision to increase the number of polling stations greatly helped reduce congestion at voting centres, and voting did not take long.

“This efficiency even led some election observers to assume that voter turnout was low,” she said.
